Cultural Competence

The objective of this course is to approach the development of cultural competence as a process that begins with awareness of the multiple identities and diverse experiences as they affect health beliefs and behaviors. Identity has traditionally included group membership based on age, race, gender, ethnicity, national origin, economic class, and religious affiliation. However, identity also includes disability, sexual orientation, marital and parental status, educational level, and health status. The focus of the course is to understand the process by which these differences become meaningful and developing the competence to work within a multiplicity of cultures.

Medical Interpreting Training

This is a comprehensive 48-hour course that may be customized to meet the healthcare needs of the community you serve. The objectives of this course is for participants to develop basic interpreting skills, gain knowledge about the health care system and all its dimensions, in addition to learning how one's own system of beliefs, customs, and norms impacts on the ability to interpret effectively.

Medical Spanish

Health care providers need to communicate quickly and effectively with patients who speak only Spanish. Intended as a beginner course, the overall objective of this course is to help participants understand frequent programs encountered by Spanish-speaking patients, provide basic medical instructions, obtain information about the patient and answer the patient's more common questions. The curriculum focuses on medical as well as general vocabulary and grammar, including colloquial terms and slang that health care providers need in order to more effectively treat Spanish-speaking patients.

Medical Portuguese

Similar to the Medical Spanish, this course is intended as a beginner course. The overall objective of this course is to help participants understand frequent problems of Portuguese-speaking patients, provide basic medical instructions, obtain information about the patient and answer the patient's more common questions. The curriculum focuses on medical as well as general vocabulary and grammar, including colloquial terms and slang that health care providers need in order to more effectively treat Portuguese-speaking patients.
